Abilene Reporter News – People collecting Pokemon on their smartphones through the new “Pokemon Go” augmented reality game have a company headed by a Cross Plains man to thank for the opportunity.

John Hanke, a 1985 graduate of Cross Plains High School, is the chief executive of Niantic Inc., the San Francisco-based company responsible for the augmented reality portion of the uberpopular phone game that has everyone trying to “catch ’em all.”

Before his foray into augmented reality, Hanke was co-founder and chief executive of Keyhole Inc. That company created and sold to Google the product that eventually became known as Google Earth in 2004. As part of the sale, Hanke spent time with Google’s Geo division, which expanded upon Google Earth and helped developed tools such as Google Maps.
